This “bad news” forms the basis for gum prints that capture the harshness and unconditional nature of the reality depicted. A second layer of pink acrylic paint is applied over this. It obscures, softens, covers up – and allows only a vague glimpse of the original image. The interplay of these two layers creates a fascinating tension: the image of disaster remains present, but is softened, aestheticised, shifted into the realm of the ‘bearable’. The series is a commentary on our collective ability to repress everyday issues. With our ‘rose-tinted glasses,’ we create a distance from what overwhelms us. Instead of intervening, getting involved or taking responsibility, we distance ourselves from the demanding reality – so that it no longer seems quite so uncomfortable. At a time when political promises are increasingly being broken and trust in institutions is eroding, this sign is also losing its credibility. The reduced prints are based on media images and work with halftone screening and contrast. The abstract form of the gumprint, supplemented by a caption, refers both to the media reproduction of political images and to the hackneyed visual language of political photography. The hands of politicians appear as mechanical gestures, emptied of all meaning. What once symbolised commitment is now an empty staging. The series addresses the invisible and yet essential: the subterranean networks of life as symbolized in the mycelium. It can be read as a poetic reflection on interconnectedness, transformation and the cyclical nature of nature. At the same time, the works open up a space for associations - between microcosm and macrocosm, between nature and abstraction. The installation combines drawing, painting and sculpture to create a sensual cosmos. Minimalist cyanotypes and fragile drawings in the style of classic herbariums meet sculptural forms and colour-intensive risographs. At a time when the Earth is characterised by extreme weather conditions, dwindling resources and radical environmental changes, the installation envisions a post-anthropocentric scenario: plant species as autonomous architects of survival, forming a speculative garden of survival – equipped with mechanical armour, defensive spines, regenerative systems and symbiotic technologies. In the installation, Denise Felber deals with artificial and altered ecosystems, with human intervention in nature, with the increasing separation of humans and nature, with loss and the grief associated with it. A visual examination of vulnerability and resilience. A reflection on hope and the power of biological evolution in a posthuman future. The installation is accompanied by a booklet in which all the finds from the fictional herbarium are presented with their location, year, place and respective competencies. The works reflect our relationship with fragile nature. It testifies to a new view of wonderful creatures with which our survival is deeply connected. It calls for a vision of a new symbiosis between man and nature as a social counter-image to the current way of dealing with finite resources, with nature. In my interpretation, four tags are mounted on an old school map of the world: “fear”, “sex”, “power” and “violence”, placed in the four cardinal points. It is these values - as world events around the globe show every day - that make up the true essence of the (contemporary) world, of human beings in their vulnerability and wretchedness, and that hold the world together at its core.
